Admission & Entrance Examination

Entrance to Bablake Junior School is by examination held in February of each year.  Two classes of seven year olds are admitted annually and older children are admitted where vacancies permit. Entrance examinations for children older than seven may be sat on any suitable occasion or during a child's visit.

During their time with us pupils will make a considerable amount of progress. Our entrance test is about assessing a child's potential and not simply what or how somebody has been taught. Pupils come to us from many different backgrounds and have had varying educational experiences.

It is our hope that all of our pupils will go on to gain entry into the Senior School.  This is quite an academic challenge and we therefore accept children into Bablake Junior School who we feel have that potential.

The assessments in Reading, English and Maths are based on the work that will be done by the children at their current schools during Key Stage 1.  In Reading, we assess each child's skills in comprehension, spelling and basic grammar and we also ask them to write in response to a shared reader. In Maths, we expect each child to have a broad, basic ability and a working knowledge of mathematical terms.

Pupils will also have to complete a non-verbal reasoning paper.  This test seeks to give an indicator as to their potential and suggests how easily they may acquire new concepts.

In advance of the entrance exam many children will visit us and perhaps spend a half day with us.  They usually want to stay longer!  As well as sitting the entrance exam, we will also contact your child's present school to get further information about their progress to date.

If you would like your son or daughter to be considered for entry into Bablake Junior School you should complete the application form.

The entrance exam takes place on the morning of the first Saturday in February each year. Please ensure that completed application forms and a £30 examination fee are submitted to the school by the end of January.

Learning Support

At Bablake Junior School we are determined to allow all of our pupils to access the full curriculum.  Lessons are carefully planned to facilitate this and support is available in small groups and individually.  Our brightest children are also challenged and supported within their learning.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Scholarships are recognition of outstanding academic talent and potential and four are awarded at the end of Year 3.

A limited number of financial bursaries are also available.  These are means tested and their award depends upon a family's financial circumstances and a child's academic potential.  Bursary decisions are made alongside the entrance exam.
