Year 5 Trip to Holdenby House

Junior School History

I was bursting with excitement for we had finally got to the 6th of November; it was time to go on our school trip to Holdenby House.

We were going to experience what it was like to be a servant in Victorian times.  Although I had been practising what the Victorian kitchen objects were, I was still a bit unsure about what was what...  John-Joseph  O'Meara

As soon as we arrived we were introduced to the severe characters of Mrs Bumbridge and Mr Rhett - the housekeeper and Butler.  Mrs Bumbridge marched about angrily and yelled at us to form lines.  Joshua Connelly

Minutes before, the courtyard was ringing with excited voices, but now there was silence in the air. Abigale Barnes

We were given a spoon of purge - it tasted awful.  Some of us suspected it really was medicine.  Later we discovered it was just cold tea!  Bethany Clarke

I had the task of cleaning the old, Victorian range.  First I scrubbed it and then polished it.  To my dismay, not a smooth surface or sparkle appeared.  Very soon my arms and legs ached.  Jhodi Thandi

Our tour of the house took us too many grand rooms.  The silverware glistened in the golden rays of the afternoon sun.  The polished, amber oak table was so shiny you could see your face in it.  Gracie Morris.

We were taken to the main hall which had amazing portraits hanging on the wall.  Their eyes seemed to stare and follow us around the room.  Ife Olomolaiye

Finally, and excitingly, we met Lady Annaly.  To entertain Her Ladyship we performed a poem, Etiquette for the Table, off by heart.

Overall, this trip was an amazing and unforgettable experience; I would love to go on it again.  Freya Bennett

Thanks to this trip, my mind is full of knowledge about the Victorians.  I conclude that life was ten times harder than it is today. Bhavan Amar
